Gyu-KakuJapanese Grill / BBQ with a twist70 W Green St, Pasadena, CA 91105 (map it!)Gyu-kaku is another in a line of "cook it yourself" chains popping up in the asian restaurant scene; there's a grilling surface at your table, and they bring you things to cook on it.
If you've never been to such a place, it's at least worth a try for cultural exposure; just be sure to get the little "tutorial" from them so you don't end up burning yourself! Lunch 11:30-3:00 / Dinner 5:30-10:30 (11:30 Fri/Sat) (626) 405-4842 [0 / 0 found this useful , viewed 481 times]

Food / ServiceThey serve a variety of standard pre-cooked japanese bbq items (e.g. chicken teriyaki and so on), but the real stars are the fresh meats and vegetables that they bring you to grill yourself.
The grilling options include obvious choices like beef and chicken, along with various marinades. Some less obvious choices are stuffed mushrooms and shrimp, also served with pretty tasty dipping sauces. The service is a little on the slow side, since they tend to be pretty full and there's a lot of stuff to be ferried back and forth (usually, you'll order several rounds of meat, rather than just getting it all at once at the beginning). Aside from that, they were courteous and helpful. Environment / AmbienceThere's a large dining area separated into a couple of sections; it's somewhat dimly lit, but that coupled with the smokiness of the grilling and dim glow from the coals make it a pretty cozy experience.
It's certainly a fun place to spend an evening, and the grilling is a simple, enjoyable process. I imagine it would get old if I had to do it every night, but as an occasional distraction it's entertaining. |
